Math you can see.
Free instruments that let every student see the math. And Socrato, a guide that helps them see it for themselves.
Seeing
Just as a telescope helps us see what's too far for our eyes, an instrument helps students see the math, not just with their eyes, but with their mind. So every student can experience that “Oh, I see” moment.
Mastery
Math in the right order. See it first. Name it last.
See it.
Everything starts with a diagram, before any symbols or vocabulary.
Say it.
Students say what they notice, in their own words.
Arrange it.
Students arrange it into a table, a graph, and an equation, mostly in this order.
Connect it.
Students see that the diagram, their words, the table, the graph, and the equation all represent the same math.
Name it.
Once students have seen it, said it, arranged it, and connected it, and only then, they're given the vocabulary.
To us, mastery isn't a score or speed. It's seeing the math clearly, and being fluent in its every representation.
Philosophy
What is math, and how do students come to see it? Everything we build starts from that question.
Resources
Guides you can use this week, with an instrument and its PDF.
A note from Jae
Our why
Growing up, I didn't particularly like math, nor was I good at it. But my grandfather was a teacher in Korea as the country rebuilt after the war, and he told me there's no greater work than teaching children. So I wanted to be one too, and when it came time to pick a subject, math was the one I was the least bad at.
That was over a decade ago. Since then, teaching it has meant finding ways to show math that click for my students. That kept me constantly digging and thinking deeply about math itself and how to teach it. The deeper I dug, the more I saw an order and a beauty in it I never knew was there.
Most students never get to see that. Somewhere along the way, they learned that math is rules to memorize and get right, fast. So when it stops clicking, they decide they're not math people.
But not seeing it yet doesn't mean they can't. Every student can see it, with the right diagrams and the right questions. That's why we build instruments, and that's why we're building Socrato: to bring back the curiosity, beauty, and joy of math for every student.
If you want that for your students too, I'd love to hear from you.
